There’s a feature in Windows 11 that will automatically restart applications and programs (restartable apps) that were opened and running when a user signed out or shut down the computer. The next time the user signs back in, the programs or apps automatically launch. Windows 11 detects and saves running programs and apps before restarting. When the user logs back in, Windows will automatically restore the previously running programs. Not all apps can do that. Third-party apps will need to register as restartable apps for Windows 11 to automatically restart when logging back into the computer. The steps below show you how to enable or disable it if enabled in Windows 11. To get started with enabling apps to automatically restart when you log back into Windows, follow the steps below:
How to enable or disable apps to auto restart on logon to Windows 11
As mentioned above, not all apps can use this feature in Windows 11. If the app is not registered as a restartable app, it will not relaunch upon user logon. Windows 11 has a centralized location for the majority of its settings. From system configurations to creating new users and updating Windows, all can be done from its System Settings pane. To get to System Settings, you can use the Windows key + I shortcut or click on Start ==> Settings as shown in the image below: Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings. Then select to open it. Windows Settings pane should look similar to the image below. In Windows Settings, click Account, and select Sign-in options on the right pane of your screen shown in the image below. On the Sign-in options settings pane, under Additional settings, toggle the button for “Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in” to the On position to enable. Changing the settings above will enable the feature. You can now exit the Settings windows.
How to disable restartable apps in Windows 11
If you change your mind about enabling restartable apps in Windows 11, you can simply disable this feature. To do so, click on the Start menu ==> Settings ==> Accounts ==> Sign-in options ==> and disable the restartable apps feature. That’s it!
